Post 3:  Responsible AI

In the last post, we discussed the importance of developing a strategic vision for the organization’s overarching AI strategy.  But before investing potentially large amounts of human and financial capital in building and implementing systems, it is imperative to ensure that the organization’s vision is implemented in a responsible and ethical fashion.  

The results of these conversations should be documented prior to start of the engagement, especially if the systems will potentially be accessed by citizens of the European Union. There are explicit provisions in the EU AI Act that not only determine the level of risk the AI system carries with respect to operating domain, but require documentation of the AI’s functionality, risk-management measures and the processes that went into the system’s formation.

Numerous frameworks exist offering guidance on ethical creation and deployment of AI: the Asilomar AI Principles, the Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI, IEEE’s Ethically Aligned Design, and the “Statement on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and ‘Autonomous’ Systems” from the European Commission’s European Group on Ethics.  Many of these frameworks have similar components which can be summarized through the FASTEPS model.  FASTEPS is an acronym that outlines a structured framework for ensuring ethical and responsible deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Here's what each letter stands for:

F - Fairness: AI systems should avoid bias and discrimination. The model and data used for training must be representative to prevent unfair outcomes.

A - Accountability: Organizations developing and deploying AI must be answerable for the system's decisions and impacts. This includes transparency about how the AI works and who is responsible for it.

S - Security: Robust safeguards are needed to protect sensitive data involved in AI systems and to prevent unauthorized access or malicious manipulation.

T - Transparency: AI systems should be explainable and interpretable. Users should be able to understand how a decision was made by the AI system, especially when the outcome has real-life consequences.

E - Ethics: AI development and deployment should align with established ethical principles and values. This means considering potential harmful impacts and prioritizing human well-being.

P - Privacy: AI systems must comply with data privacy regulations and ensure that personal information is collected, processed, and used in a responsible and secure manner.

S - Safety: AI systems should be designed and operated with safety at the forefront. This includes rigorous testing and continuous monitoring to minimize the risk of unintended harm.

The FASTEPS model provides a comprehensive and practical approach to responsible AI development. It highlights critical concerns that need to be addressed throughout the lifecycle of an AI system, including:

Mitigating Bias and Unfairness: AI systems can perpetuate societal biases if trained on incomplete or biased data. The FASTEPS model emphasizes fairness to address these concerns.  

For example, racial recognition software has been found to exhibit racial and gender bias, misidentifying people of color and women at higher rates. Algorithms are often trained on datasets that don't fully represent the diversity of the real world. Techniques like de-biasing algorithms, using more diverse and inclusive datasets, and regular audits for fairness metrics help reduce these harmful biases.

Building Trust: Responsible AI fosters trust between humans and technology as people become more confident in the decisions made by AI systems when accountability, transparency, and ethical principles are followed.

Say a self-driving car makes a decision that leads to an accident, but it's unclear how the system arrived at that decision. This lack of transparency erodes public trust in the technology.  The solution is to implement explainable AI (XAI) methods. These techniques aim to make the inner workings of AI models more understandable, allowing users and regulators to see the reasoning behind decisions.

Avoiding Unintended Consequences: Focusing on ethics, safety, and privacy leads to better risk assessment and mitigation of negative impacts that AI could have in various industries.

If a recommendation algorithm on a social media platform optimizes for engagement but inadvertently promotes polarizing and harmful content, that can have negative societal impacts.  Thorough impact assessments considering potential wider consequences, including social and ethical repercussions. It's also crucial to implement feedback mechanisms such as RLHF (Real-Life Human Feedback) for users and testers to flag problematic content.

Compliance: Regulations like the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and emerging AI-specific legislation necessitate a framework that incorporates privacy and ethical considerations from the design stage.

In practice, an AI-powered healthcare system may collect and process highly sensitive patient data. Failure to comply with regulations such as HIPAA or GDPR can lead to significant legal and financial penalties.  To help compensate for these issues, incorporate privacy-by-design principles at various stages by embedding data protection measures into the system from the beginning, conducting regular privacy audits, and ensuring secure data storage practices.

Developing AI strategies and projects with a focus on ethical deployment is crucial for ensuring responsible use and societal acceptance. The above highlights the importance of measurable objectives that not only advance technical capabilities but also align with broader ethical standards as encapsulated in frameworks like the FASTEPS model. By integrating principles such as fairness, accountability, and transparency, organizations can foster trust and mitigate risks associated with AI technologies.
